Here at Lock Family Eye Care in West Des Moines, our optometry team sees a number of patients who are concerned about having symptoms of sight loss. While a bit of vision loss is to be expected due to aging, there are some signs that could indicate a more alarming problem.

Signs that Sight Loss Needs Immediate Diagnosis and Care

If any of the following symptoms arise, it’s important to see an eye care specialist right away for a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis. After all, these issues often don’t resolve themselves and can cause permanent eye damage without immediate treatment.

  • Sudden or persistent eye pain
  • Redness, burning, itching, or discharge of the eyes
  • Extreme light sensitivity
  • Seeing floating spots, halos, spider web patterns, or sudden flashes of bright light
  • Hazy, blurred, or double vision
  • Seeing what appears like the eye ‘filling up’ or a ‘curtain’ is coming down in the line of sight
  • Changes in iris color
  • White spots in the pupil area
  • Difficulty reading
  • Challenges seeing at night

These are only a few potential signs of vision loss that one might experience during his or her lifetime. However, there are some signs that won’t present themselves whatsoever until the damage is done.

Common Causes of Vision Loss

Besides normal sight loss that often accompanies aging, there are a few conditions that are known to further vision problems or cause complete sight loss without optometric intervention.

  • Glaucoma: More commonly associated with age, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in those over 60. Glaucoma is caused by a high pressure of internal fluid buildup in the eye. This disease is often manageable with medications, but not curable.
  • Cataracts: Caused by a clouding of the eye lens, this condition can be treated with medications and laser surgery.
  • Macular Degeneration: Changes in the macula can distort vision and result in blindness. While not curable, progression can often be slowed with optometry treatments.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: Individuals with diabetes may suffer from diabetic retinopathy due to an uncontrollable amount of sugar in the blood. Getting this condition under control can help resolve vision changes.

Injuries, infections, and certain health conditions can exacerbate the issues, so it’s essential to undergo regular eye exams and get eye care treatment as needed to maintain good vision for life.
