What is Computer Vision? Our Optometrist Explains.

What is Computer Vision Syndrome in West Des Moines, IA?

Computer vision syndrome gets its name from its strong association with looking at computer screens and similar devices for prolonged periods of time. The "syndrome" aspect refers to the fact that it involves not one, but many symptoms that occur together. This syndrome is especially problematic for those who work on computers all day, but anyone who gets a lot of screen time can suffer it as well, regardless of what's on the screen.

What Are the Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome?

There are several symptoms related to computer vision syndrome. Dry eyes, sticky eyes, eye strain, blurry vision, neck and shoulder pain, and headaches are all hallmarks. While other conditions may cause one or two of these symptoms, computer vision syndrome typically results in several of them popping up within a short timeframe.

What Are Common Causes of CVS?

Staring at a computer is one of the common causes of computer vision syndrome, hence its popular name. However, there are usually aggravating factors that are also in play. Glare on the screen, improper lighting, poor posture, and uncorrected vision problems often combine to create the syndrome's effects.

How is this Syndrome Diagnosed?

Your eye doctor will diagnose computer vision syndrome by considering your eye health history, overall medical history, measuring current visual acuity, and sometimes, testing things like how well the eyes work together. You may also be asked about your computing environment.

How do I get Treatment for CVS?

Once you have been diagnosed with computer vision syndrome, the next step is to stop it from happening. For most people with this condition, greatly reducing computer time is not a real option. Therefore, other measures must be used. Treatments include separate glasses or contact prescription for use on the computer, using blue light blocking eyewear, and providing vision therapy. Counseling on ergonomics, postural issues, and related factors may also be provided.
