How Old Do Patients Have to Be to Wear Contact Lenses?

Teenagers as young as 13 years old can successfully wear contact lenses, but it all depends on the patient. If your teen is responsible enough to care for his lenses on the prescribed schedule, there's no reason why he shouldn't wear them.

What Kind of Contact Lens Varieties are There?

The most common contact lens today is the disposable lens. You wear one pair of contacts all day long and throw them away at the end of the day. The next morning, you put in a fresh pair. Other types of contacts are extended wear, which you can wear continuously for a week or more, reusable lenses that need cleaning each night, and rigid gas permeable lenses, which are more durable but need more care. Your lifestyle will help to determine which type of lens is right for you.

Can I Wear Contacts if I Have Astigmatism or Need Bifocals?

Lens manufacturers have created toric contact lenses for patients with astigmatism and even lenses with more than one prescription on each lens, ideal for those who wear bifocal eyeglasses.

What to Expect at Our West Des Moines Contact Lens Exam

A contact lens exam begins like any other eye examination, but adds more details strictly for contact lens wearers. Our eye doctor will measure your eyeball, both the size of your eye and the curvature of the eyeball itself. This ensures that your new lenses fit the surface of your eyes. You'll also have a consultation with our doctor to determine what kind of lenses you need and want.

Our West Des Moines optometrist also serves Waukee, Urbandale, Johnston and the surrounding area. If you have any questions about contact lenses, or if you're ready to make the switch, call our office at 515-267-1312. We'll make an appointment that fits in with your busy lifestyle
