During an Eye Exam

An eye exam has two basic purposes: to find out if your eyes are healthy and to find out how to give you the best vision. Most exams, whether for adults or children, begin with a visual acuity test. This is usually some form of the test using an eye chart on the wall with progressively smaller lines of type. Using various tools and machines, our eye doctor can determine the sharpness of your vision and the prescription of the lens needed to correct poor vision, if necessary.

After the vision part of the exam is finished, we'll move on to caring for the health of your eyes. With small children, our doctor will simply use a small light to inspect inside the eye and look for certain behaviors that might indicate vision problems. Older children and adults will have their eyes dilated with eye drops to allow a better look inside the eye.

For adults, especially those over the age of 50, we'll check for common eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. If the doctor finds developing disease of any kind, she can recommend treatment and will monitor your condition, working with an eye surgeon if necessary, to correct your vision.
